Naturopathic medicine is a form of primary health care that utilizes the art and science of diagnosis and treatment, using natural therapies and non-pharmacological approaches, and focuses on the whole person rather than on individual parts. Naturopathic doctors use medical histories, physical exams and labs to assist in the process of coming to a diagnosis. They draw both on traditional knowledge and current research to inform both diagnosis and treatment.

The treatment modalities used in naturopathic medicine include botanical medicine, clinical nutrition, lifestyle counselling, physical manipulation, homeopathy, acupuncture and hydrotherapy which seek to support the health of the whole person gently and with minimal side effects, treat the root cause of the disease, and prevent future development of disease.

Length of visits are approximate and how much of that time is used is based on your individual needs. In addition, just because you leave the visit, doesn’t mean a naturopathic physician stops working on your case. A lot of research goes on behind the scenes to make sure the care you get is appropriate for you and up to date with current research.

Naturopathic medicine can address all forms of health concerns; from physical to psychological, pediatrics to geriatrics, prevention to chronic disease. Naturopathic medicine also works well in conjunction with conventional medicine and makes a complementary addition to your health care team. Many naturopathic treatments support conventional treatments to increase their effectiveness, reduce side effects, or improve quality of life.

Some common conditions naturopathic physicians see are:

  • Health promotion and general wellness
  • Fertility
  • Thyroid conditions
  • Menopausal symptoms
  • Autoimmune disease
  • Gastrointestinal conditions
  • Food sensitivities
  • Allergies

Eczema and psoriasis
Depression/anxiety
Fibromyalgia and chronic fatigue syndrome
Chronic pain
Migraines

Prolotherapy creates a local and controlled mild inflammatory response that signals the body to send healing cells and stimulate collagen production in that area. This is especially useful in ligament, tendon, and joint injury because these tissues do not have direct blood supply and therefore can have a difficult time healing properly. This process causes these tissues to regenerate and become stronger. This is a very important factor in overstretched and chronically damaged ligaments. Ligaments function to hold bones together while allowing for appropriate mobility. If they are too long or not strong enough, there will be instability and too much movement in that joint.

This has been theorized as a source of chronic pain, as ligaments and the section of bone they attach to are rich in nerve endings. Prolotherapy has been shown to shorten and strengthen overstretched lax ligaments and help heal the associated nerve endings, which decreases pain and improves function. If you have chronic back, neck, or joint pain that gets only temporarily relief from chiropractic adjustments and massage treatments, you may have ligament or tendon weakness and/or overstretching, and may benefit from prolotherapy.

Ozone Therapy: Our ability to transport and utilize oxygen in the body is important for almost all bodily functions. This can decrease with age, poor digestion, or exposure to pollutants. Ozone therapy primarily helps oxygenate cells of the body, resulting in improved function of that cell, decreased inflammation, and decreased oxidative stress of the tissues. It activates the immune system and is also anti-bacterial, anti-fungal, and anti-viral. Ozone therapy has been shown to improve nerve function, and can therefore help chronic pain on it’s own. It can be used with either local injections or systemically through IV or insufflation.

Ozone is especially helpful when used along with prolotherapy and helps enhance it’s effects on the tissue. Prolotherapy is the signal for the body to heal an area, while ozone gives the cells enough energy to perform that healing quickly and efficiently. Ozone also has the benefit of being able to be used and effective in places that prolotherapy can’t be used, like next to metal implants or in the bellies of muscles.

One of the most useful benefits of ozone therapy is it’s effect in skin conditions. Especially conditions like skin infections or stubborn non-hormonal acne, but it’s also been found to be beneficial for eczema and psoriasis by decreasing inflammation, improving immune function, and fighting infections that complicate the lesions.

Ozone works by helping all our cells work better and more efficiently, so it is relevant for the treatment and prevention of so many conditions!
